![]() | ![]() Effect of Anti-Prostaglandin Therapy in Experimental Parainfluenza Type 3 Pneumonia in Weaned, Conventional Calves Selman IA, Allan EM, Gibbs HA, et al: Vet Rec 115: 101-105, 1984. Proceedings 13th Congress on Diseases of Cattle 1:87-92 1984. Protocol 10- to 12-week-old calves challenged with a PI-3 virus strain previously isolated from a severe, acute outbreak of pneumonia. Calves individually housed and randomly allocated between two groups: Untreated Treated with Banamine, 2.2 mg/kg once daily for 3 days Clinical examinations conducted, with 218 observations made after the initiation of treatment: Once daily for the 14 days prior to exposure Four times daily, treatment phase, Days 1-3 Twice daily, Day 0 and Day 4 through termination of the study Results Coughing abruptly diminished in the Banamine group within 6 to 8 hours after initial treatment. Banamine group showed fewer signs of depression. A reduction in fever was observed more frequently among the Banamine calves (51 vs 57 observations). Banamine group had lower respiratory rates (46/min vs 69/min, 45 vs 94 observations). Banamine calves had marked reduction in pulmonary consolidation. (Macroscopic differences obvious at necropsy between groups on Days 4, 9, and 12.) | |
