![]() | ![]() Effect of Anti-Prostaglandin Therapy in an Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Induced by the Oral Administration of 3, methylindole Selman IE, Allan EM, Gibbs HA, et al: Proceedings 13th World Congress on Diseases of Cattle 1:81-86, 1984. Protocol 10- to 12-week-old healthy dairy bull calves housed together. 10 orally dosed with 0.1 g/kg 3, methylindole diluted in approximately 5 liters water 2 environmental controls Clinical examinations once daily, days -7 to -1, and twice daily thereafter. Calves showing a doubling of initial respiratory rate or an increase in respiratory rate associated with dullness were treated. Orally dosed animals alternatively assigned to treatment (n=5) or non-treatment (n=5) groups as criteria for treatment obtained. Treated animals received Banamine administered IV at 2.2 mg/kg daily for 3 consecutive days. Results Calves treated with Banamine had immediately lower respiratory rates following treatment, with the lower rates sustained. Calves treated with Banamine were bright, alert, and showed no signs of depression, while the untreated calves were persistently or profoundly depressed. Calves treated with Banamine had significantly less lung congestion and edema, with a major difference as early as day 2 post-treatment. Lung weights of untreated calves were significantly higher than lung weights of the calves treated with Banamine.
